Incomer Information

Darmstadt is a technical University and our Math. Dept. is certainly the best in the state.  It is also quite large with many courses being offered.

Particular strengths include:
* a graduate school on fluid dynamics (many advanced courses in English)
* optimization (large group, regular course offerings usually in German)
* stochastics
There are also good groups in pure subjects such as
* logic (courses in English)
* algebra/number theory
There are further groups on numerics, geometry, etc.

Our course offer in English is limited, so knowledge of German is necessary.

The city of Darmstadt has a population of about 140000.  It is located about 25 km away from Frankfurt in the Rhein-Main area, a centre of economic activity in Germany.

Students from abroad are welcome to study for a term or an academic year at the Department of Mathematics at TU Darmstadt. We always have a number of exchange students at our department.

General information about the University

On the Opens external link in current windowUniversity webpages. you can access information on Visa, Housing, arrival, etc. Valuable information is on the Opens external link in current windowarrival page.
To determine the dates when classes start and finish. see  Opens external link in current windowdates of current term or Opens external link in current windowdates of future terms under the entries Beginn der Lehrveranstaltungen and Ende der Lehrveranstaltungen.

Courses offered in Mathematics

To see the courses currently offered, check the department course page.  There, at most times, only course plan refers to future courses, the listings of which are subject to change.  Course descriptions in English available, currently from this webpage, but the presentation is preliminary and the address will change.

WS refers to winter term, SS to summer. Numbers such as 4+2 mean 4 class hours and 2 problem session hours per week (where an hour means 45 min). Multiply by 1.5 to obtain ECTS points (the example gives 1.5 * 6 = 9 ECTS points).  However, seminars, although marked with 2 have 6 ECTS points.

Exams and Credits

Larger classes have written exams while the smaller advanced classes usually have oral exams. To register for an exam, you need to use the Tucan campus management system, and see the Studienbüro on the ground floor. The Studienbüro will also issue the Erasmus (or other) transcript.

Many of our foreign students have no experience with oral exams.  The best way to get acquainted with this kind of examination is to be present at an oral exam taken by another student; the necessary consent of examiner and student is normally given.  Another opportunity is a mock (test) exam, perhaps given by the assistant of the lecturer.  Please ask your lecturers early enough for their recommendations and suggestions; please discuss the issue with the Erasmus tutor as well.

Accomodation

Accommodation in Darmstadt and the surrounding area is difficult to obtain as the demand is higher than the supply. We list links that may help to find accommodation:

  • The Opens external link in current windowStudentenwerk has a large number of student rooms, but only a small number of available rooms. You will have to put your name on a waiting list.
  • The Opens external link in current windowDarmstädter Echo is the local newspaper and carries advertisements for all types of accommodation.
  • Opens external link in current windowSperrmüll is a magazine that also carries offers of available rooms.
  • A great service with a lot of available rooms can be found at Opens external link in current windowSTUDENTEN-WG.de and at Opens external link in current windowWG-GESUCHT.de.

If you need help in securing a room that you have found at any of these links, get in contact with us.
