Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor of Science programme in Mathematics is the standard entry into university education in mathematics. Prerequisite for enrolment is the Abitur (German school-leaving examination) or equivalent.
The programme is structured in six semesters, starting with a comprehensive mandatory curriculum in the first two years, complemented by more elective elements in the 3rd year. This offers a wide range of choices. The curriculum is more or less fixed for your the first and second year of the Bachelor programme. After that you can choose from a wide range of mathematical courses during the third year.

Master of Science

We encourage students to proceed to our Master programme after finishing their bachelor's degree. The Master programme takes four more semesters.
This programme allows you to concentrate on two areas of mathematics in-depth, i.e., you typically follow two tracks of mathematical specialisation ("Vertiefungsmodule", each comprising the equivalent of two consecutive full lecture courses. The 7 main subject areas available correspond to department's research groups except didactics. There is also the option to replace one of the mathematical specialisation tracks by a corresponding track in another subject (like Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Economics, Physics), i.e., to focus on one mathemarical and one non-mathematical specialisation.
The specialisation tracks (Vertiefungsmodule) are complemented by a choice of other courses and a seminar in mathematics, in a minor (non-mathematical subject) plus some courses in the humanities ("Studium Generale", also comprising language options). A major part of the study programme comprises research towards a Master Thesis in one of your areas of specialisation, and the completion of the written thesis (six months).

Educational Studies in Mathematics and Mathematical Didactics

These special programmes are for prospective teachers secondary education and include, besides mainstream courses in mathematics, intensive studies in didactics and pedagogy specifically addressing the needs of mathematics as a school subject.

Teaching and Learning at TU Darmstadt

Teaching and Learning might be quite different from what you know from school and also from experiences with university education in other countries. Besides attending lectures (class room teaching), you will take part in exercise classes and attend seminars. You will also have to study and work a lot on your own or in working groups with other students (e.g., revising your notes, reading up on course material in textbooks, doing additional exercises as homework assignments or discussing subject matter with professors, staff or fellow students).
